Smart Thermostat

Everything seems to be getting “smarter” these days: Smartphone, Smart TV, Smart Board, etc. Now, even your thermostat is getting smarter. Yes, the thing you use to set the temperature inside your home is getting a facelift. No longer are the days where you are constantly adjusting the thermostat throughout your busy day to try and save money on your energy bill. Now, companies like Nest and others are doing this for you; making your life easier and saving you some money along the way. There are many new gadgets the 3rd generation Nest Learning Thermostat has to offer.   These new thermostats are adding another “smart” technology to the ever growing list and changing the energy game.

The Nest Learning Thermostat and other smart thermostats are clean, sleek, and easy to use. They are designed to “learn” from your behaviors and habits. After some time, they will operate themselves. For example, many people make their home cooler at night while they are sleeping. After adjusting the thermostat manually for a week or two, the smart thermostat will pick up on your pattern and start adjusting the temperature for you at that time of night. Due to its motion detectors, these thermostats can also change the temperature of certain rooms inside your home based on your movements and location. Smart thermostats will also adjust themselves based on the exterior wind chill and humidity of that particular day.

These thermostats can even protect your home. They not only monitor the temperature of your heating and cooling units, but also monitor all other aspects. Your “smart” thermostat will tell you if there is something wrong with your heater, or if a pipe were to burst due to freezing exterior temperatures. This thermostat is always looking out for you and your family and will provide peace of mind to all.

Like the idea of using your smartphone to control the temperature inside your home, even when you are away? Smart thermostats can be controlled remotely and show how much money you are saving from week to week. The Nest Learning Thermostat, according to an independent study, showed that the average home saved 10-12% on their heating bill and 15% on their cooling bill when using the smart thermostat. In conclusion, “smart” thermostats are not only convenient and aesthetic, but also pay for themselves over time.

Great post! I really think the fact that this thermostat can figure out wind chill and humidity (which your run of the mill thermostat will not!) is a huge selling point. Those factors really effect what temperature you are comfortable at. Thanks for sharing!

The Nest Thermostat is definitely a looker. It is a work of art. I like the idea that they are pushing the technology of it by designing it’s auto learn feature which replaces the need to program it. Do you know much about the Ecobee3? I like their development of room sensors which could be a large new trend.
